I thought new eggs were supposed to be small?

Abigail's first 3 eggs. The first, as you can see, is bigger than the two newer ones.

So, now we know why poor Abby was screeching so much before she finally laid that first egg– it’s almost 2x the size of the rest of her eggs.

She’s been laying an egg a day, but (with exception of that first monstrosity) the rest have been extra small eggs.

She is only 17 weeks old, so I should expect them to get bigger some day, right?

  1. The eggs should get bigger – my first few eggs I got from my oldest hens were kind of small, now they lay normal (Large by grocery store standards) eggs. The monster egg may be a double yolk! πŸ™‚ I’ve had monstrous eggs occasionally and they sometimes are double yolk. Congratulations on your eggs! πŸ™‚

    1. I really do feel sorry for her though! All that effort and her first egg is a monster egg! I’ll have to report back once we crack into it and let people know if it’s a double yolk.

  2. Don’t worry! Yes, the eggs will get bigger. It is pretty rare to see a chicken lay a really big egg for their first egg! Normally it is around the size of a large pebble. The second and third egg are actually the size of my chicken’s eggs. I don’t really see how they are ‘tiny’–besides, she’s only laid three, so soon they’ll get bigger.
