The chick on the right, checking out my boot, is a bit of a special case in the coop. He’s one of the last chicks to start losing his down, and as you can see (or maybe you can’t?), his feathers are kind of like a perpetual bad hair day. Constantly mussed and sticking up all over the place.
He’s also one of the only chicks left who freaks out when I pick up. I mean, total freak out. Screaming, struggling. You’d think I was killing him, the way he carries on. And I don’t know why. I’ve never hurt any of them, or let anyone else hurt them. Little Dude and I have taken good care of these chicks. But struggle and freak he does despite it all.
Because of this (and also because of his perpetual bad hair day), I call him my Little Hot Mess.
The other day, I was able to pick him and calm him enough to pet him for a bit. Talked to him softly and told him what a handsome boy he is. He was calm for a while and then got restless, so I put him back down. I’m wondering if I can help him outgrow his ‘hot mess’ stage, or if he’s just destined to be the ‘weird one’ of the group.
